Bodø Airport
Bodø Airport is located in Hernes, at the tip of the Bodø peninsula in Bodø Municipality. Bodø Airport sees around 1.75 million passengers, and is the second largest airport in Northern Norway. The airport terminal is about 1.5 kilometres southwest of the centre of Bodø, and borders the Vestbyen district to the north.
Tourism is a vital industry in Bodø, and beyond a rich city life in spite of its size, well-known attractions such as the old Kjerringøy Trading Post and Saltstraumen only a one hour’s drive from the centre.
In addition to tourism, seafood is a key industry for the municipality, and the Norwegian Armed Forces are also a major employer in Bodø. Bodø is an aviation town first and foremost, and you can find the country’s primary military airbase here, Widerøe’s main offices and the company’s largest technical base, as well as an active airport environment. In 2029, a brand new airport is set to be opened, and Bodø is also the home of the Norwegian Aviation Museum. Bodø is a great jumping-off point for experiencing Lofoten, Vesterålen and the Helgeland coast. The EU’s expert cultural jury decided in 2019 that Bodø and Nordland would be the 2024 European Capital of Culture, the first Capital of Culture north of the Arctic Circle.
