Travelling to Svalbard
Even though Svalbard is a part of the Kingdom of Norway, it is not a part of the Schengen area. You do not require a visa for entry to Svalbard, but if you travel via Norway/the Schengen Area it is important to ensure that you get a double entry visa to the Schengen area. For more information, please contact the office of the Governor of Svalbard.
Mandatory Passport Control for Norwegian and Foreign Citizens
For all travelers to and from Svalbard, passport control is mandatory. A national ID card is also valid for all residents within the Schengen area. Svalbard is a visa-free area, so a visa is not required for entry; however, for departures from Svalbard, a valid visa must be in place for those nationalities that require one. Therefore, carefully review all documents to avoid possible denial of boarding.
